ABOUT OUR CSA

In exchange for your membership fee, you will receive a weekly share of the freshest in-season produce grown by Balsam Farms. We try our best to make each week’s share different and interesting, with vegetables you know and love, and some you might not be so familiar with. Depending on what we are harvesting, our farmers will choose a delicious selection of fresh vegetables, greens, herbs and fruit for you each week. We may also occasionally include a value added item from our farm like pestos, pickles, jams, or tomato sauce.

Each week we’ll include helpful information like recipes, storage tips, and preservation techniques to help you make the most of your share and keep your vegetables fresher longer. So that our members can share in the abundance of crops at their peak, we’ll also occasionally offer wholesale pricing to our CSA members for bulk purchases on items such as cucumbers, tomatoes, corn, etc. so members can preserve them for when they’re no longer available fresh. Of course we’ll include some suggestions about how to pickle, can, or freeze various items in case you don’t already have your own recipes.

In addition to the basic farm share, we offer additional options from other quality local food producers to supplement your weekly share, including:

Fruit: Farmers Choice of Seasonal Fruit which may include berries, apples, pears, peaches, cantaloupe, watermelon, etc. from Balsam Farms, Briermere Farms, The Milk Pail, Anderson Farm, or other local farms.

Prepared Foods: Farmers choice featuring prepared foods from Balsam Farms or other local vendors, including pestos, pickles, soups, dips, jams, sauce, desert breads, pies, etc..

Fresh Mozarella: One ball of fresh, never-refrigerated mozzarella with incredible flavor and texture from Villa Italian Specialties, made fresh, daily.

Assorted Local/Regional Cheeses: Each week, members will receive one piece of cheese (either cow, goat, or sheep cheese) including cheeses from Mecox Dairy in Bridgehampton and other local and regional cheese producers.

Iacono Eggs: Members will recieve one dozen eggs each week form Iacono Farm in East Hampton, NY.

Bread: Members will receive one loaf of bread from producers such as Hampton Sourdough, Blue Duck Bakery, Eli’s Breads, or a similar bakery item such as specialty rolls, focaccia, etc.

Acabonac Farms Beef: Organic, grass fed, frozen, beef. Members will receive a mixture of premium steaks, burger patties, ground beef, and other cuts (example share: 2 pcs NY Strip, 2 pcs Ribeye Steak, two 1lb packages ground beef, two 2-pack burger patties). Beef Shares will be available for pickup for subscribing members four times throughout the season on the same day as their regular CSA share pick up.

Cut Flowers: Farmers choice of 1 bouquet of flowers the will include a variety of mixed bouquets, sunflower bouquets, etc. throughout the season.

Although share value will vary from week to week, the items included in your share over the course of the season will have a retail value far greater than the cost of your share. We also invite our members to a 10% discount off any additional fresh produce purchased during any of our CSA pickup times.

When you join, your membership fee helps us to do things like buy seeds and fertilizer, fuel our tractors, and pay our farmers for their hard work planting and harvesting. When our working capital comes directly from our customers, it decreases our dependency on bank loans to help cover the costs of farming in the early season.

Fresh food, open spaces, strengthened local economy, and a thriving agricultural community.

When local farms and farmers are supported by their communities, we all reap the benefits. Having working farms in the community provides food and work for friends, neighbors, and visitors, and provides the beautiful open spaces and vistas that make us all proud to call the East End our home.
